HEADS UP, DO NOT DOWNLOAD MODS OR MODPACKS FROM CURSEFORGE RIGHT NOW, CURSEFORGE HAS BEEN COMPROMISED
BE SAFE GAMERS PLEASEEE
an update direct from the curseforge twitter regarding this:
key points to note:
- CurseForge itself is not compromised in any way
- a user made several accounts (now banned) uploading projects with malware. the Luna Pixel Studios situation was hacked separately, uploading similar malware. LPS and CF are in contact.
- they're in the process of going through all relevant projects/files and will be deploying more security measures in future. no new files will be approved until this is resolved.
- DO NOT delete your curseforge client as this will not solve the issue. CF intends to deploy a fix for this through the client.
- DO scan your PC for malware and avoid downloading files from new accounts for the next few days.
(accurate as of June 7th, 1pm GMT).
an additional update on this, for people who very much want all of the available information, here is the technical write-up/ongoing document on what the maleware does, how to detect it, what is believed to be compromised, and what to do if you believe you may have been compromised. the hack is known to affect linux and windows; other operating systems are currently believed safe. if you have downloaded and run a modpack since may 22nd until june 6th, please check using the steps in the document below for infected files. if you have not done that, you are safe (although you should probably delete any mods believed to be infected). if you do not use windows or linux, you are safe. if you perform the steps below and find nothing, you are safe.
if you perform the steps below and find something, know that, currently, the server the maleware was communicating with has been taken down. you should act as though your passwords were compromised.
the infected files are unlikely to be detected by your current anti-maleware, so make sure to manually check if you believe you have been compromised!
curseforge has also released a script you can run to check for the files.
this is the current list of known infected mods (as of june midnight june 8th UTC):

note that vault integrations is not the official vault hunters mod; douwsky has confirmed that is an unofficial mod. these mods have all been removed from curseforge and cannot be currently downloaded. if you don't have one of these mods, you might be safe, but still run a check to be certain! the maleware is designed to replicate itself across all jar files on your system (yikes), and so if you ran one of these mods while it was infected, it still may be present on your system in any of your minecraft instances, including ones that were not originally infected.
additionally, the below modpacks were found to be infected. these modpacks have now been updated to a non-infected version, but if you have downloaded and played these packs, check your system.
- Buried Barrels
- Sky Villages [Forge/Fabric]
- Simply Houses
- When Dungeons Arise -Forge/Fabric
- Skyblock Core
- Prominence [FORGE]
- Medieval MC [FORGE] - MMC3
- Better MC [FORGE] - BMC3
note the list of infected mods is not complete. it has been updating throughout the day as more research is done. until further notice, assume any mod downloaded since about mid-april could be infected, and do not play or run any instance of modded minecraft you have not played before. additionally, check your system using the tool to make sure you aren't already infected!
if you were infected, treat your entire system as infected and all of your passwords as compromised. proceed accordingly.
a useful guide as to what to do in that case can be found here:
as of now, the maleware is believed to have been neutralized (the server it communicates its payload to is offline). however, the malicious actor has tried to start up at least one new server at that IP address before it was taken down, so treat the infection as still actively compromising your systems if it is present.
stay safe, and i hope this information helps!
one more update, as more information has come out throughout the day, this time with additional known compromised mods/modpacks and a link to suggested course of action if you believe you may have compromised.
the end-all be-all here is assume any new modded minecraft instance is unsafe to play. if you have an existing instance and are not infected, you are most likely fine, and can continue playing that, but do not update it, and do not download any new mods.
So I want to highlight why this is a lot more impressive than it looks on the aurface.
gonna preface this with I am more Furry Adjacent than anything. I mostly went to the local con because a bunch of my friends did and the Chaotic Adorable energy of most suiters is my vibe. Still, I have several friends and acquaintances who suit.
For those unaware: Fursuits are best described as wearing an extra 15-20lbs of carpet sewn to wire mesh with zero ventilation beyond maybe a small fan in the "head".
They're genuinely the best dancer there, because they were locked on the beat and their movements were expressive and sharp under 15lbs of carpet sewn to wire mesh.
All my respect to suiters man. They're a different type.
i just wanna add that most suits are not built off wire mesh. most are actually stuffed with poly fill or built on foam. which is much heavier. the fur itself is heavy, and the foam and polyfil make it even heavier
bc it’s so heavy, fursuit dancers have to GREATLY exaggerate every movement. so this person is moving more and faster than it looks on the surface
Something you should always do with these kinds of maps is look at a population density map to make sure the map isn't just showing you where people live.
Population map:
Good, we can see there's not just a correlation between where people are dying and where people live. In fact, in some cases, places with cities can actually have a higher life expectancy! So the correlation clearly isn't "more people = more death". In the north, the city-to-longer-life correlation is likely caused by those cities being more liberal and having better healthcare policies.
But that trend only seems to work for cities in the north and for California. For the south and the Midwest, there isn't much of a correlation at all.
Now let's look at a poverty map.
There's a correlation. Notice the poverty map includes regions that correlate with lower life expectancy that the racial map does not, like Kentucky, West Virginia, and Alaska. No clear explanation for why the life expectancy in Nevada is so low, though.
That doesn't mean race has nothing to do with this or that there isn't a correlation between race and life expectancy - there are a few parts on the racial map that correspond to the life expectancy map that don't show up on the poverty map, too!
It's clear that both race and poverty, both combined and independently, play a role in lower life expectancy.
